Roy Jacob Lopez, son of Roy Lopez and Veronica Gomez has two older sisters, Arianna Serrano and Alexa Lopez. Roy graduated with a Business degree in 2020 from New Mexico State University.
In high school, Roy prepped at Mesquite High School in Gilbert, Arizona. On the football field as a senior, Roy tallied 53 tackles, 17.0 tackles for loss, and 6.0 sacks. Roy was an Arizona Football Coaches Association Top 25 Player in the State as a senior, 2015 First-team All-State selection, and 2015 Defensive Lineman of the Year by Arizona Varsity Rivals. In addition, Roy lettered four years in wrestling as a heavyweight, amassing two State Championships in his junior and senior years and a career record of 113-3.
In college, Roy played four seasons at New Mexico State…Saw time in 40 games and recorded 137 career tackles, 20.0 tackles for loss, and 8.0 sacks. Roy’s best season with the Aggies came as a junior in 2018, played in all 12 games, and piled up 63 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks,12.5 TFL as a junior. Roy was named 2017 All-Sun Belt Conference Honorable Mention after his sophomore campaign and became a dominant force on the Aggies defense being named a 2-time All-Sun Belt performer. Roy helped the Aggies to a bowl game win over Utah State in the 2018 Arizona Bowl hosted in Tucson, Arizona. During the pandemic Roy made a tough decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal due to New Mexico State canceling the season, Roy entered and within 24 hours had offers from Arizona, Illinois, Virginia, Colorado, San Diego State, and Texas Tech. He decided to stay close to home and play for The University of Arizona where he made an immediate impact for the Wildcats under then Head Coach, Kevin Sumlin.
As a professional, Roy was drafted by the Houston Texans in the sixth round with the 195th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft on May, 1st 2021.
After two seasons with the Houston Texans, Roy was signed by the Arizona Cardinals on September 26th, 2023 where he currently starts at nose tackle.
